Superintendent's E-News (February 7, 2025)
Dear Rush-Henrietta Families and Employees,
Many superintendent duties are visible to the public, but much work is done behind the scenes to support our school community. Board of Education Vice President Mai Abullah and I recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for public education. Many districts sent their representatives.Mai and I spoke with representatives of U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and met with Rep. Joe Morelle. We stressed the importance of fully funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, better supporting Career and Technical Education, and providing additional funding to help develop the special education teacher pipeline. We also heard actress Holly Robinson Peete speak about the challenges and joys of raising a child who has autism. It was a productive visit to the nation’s capital.
Next month I will visit our lawmakers in Albany to advocate for additional funding and advocate for educational reform that will help allow us to support students even more. I encourage you to be involved in this process by contacting your state representatives. In addition to Governor Kathy Hochul, local lawmakers include state Assemblymember Harry Bronson and state Senators Jeremy Cooney and Pam Helming. Let them know how you feel about education and ask them to lend more support to our school district. Thank you for raising your voices on behalf of our children.
Look Who is in the Student Spotlight
Third-grader Dominick Ficklin was nominated by Crane Elementary Principal Brian Hill for this recognition. Mr. Hill tells us Dominick is very helpful around the building. This youngster cares about his classmates and happily helps his teacher when he can. “He loves to check her mailbox and pick up copies for her,” Mr. Hill says. “He will help younger students if they drop something in the hallway. Dominick also checks on students that may be having a tough day.” We want to raise good citizens and Dominick is a positive example for his peers. Keep up the good work!
Take the Parent Survey Today
This week we launched our annual K-12 parent survey to ask for your feedback on what we do well in Rush-Henrietta and what we can improve. All responses are anonymous; participation is voluntary, but encouraged and appreciated. We ask that you complete one survey for each child you have attending school in Rush-Henrietta. The first screen allows you to choose your preferred language. Please click on the down arrow in the box next to the globe icon if you wish to select a language other than English. Your feedback is important to us. The results will be summarized and reviewed with members of our administrative team and building principals. The survey is open through Sunday, February 16 and available at www.rhnet.org/survey2025.
Celebrate Black History With Us
This February, Rush-Henrietta is proud to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. The community is invited to join us Thursday, February 27, for a wonderful evening of education and celebration of excellence in Black and African American history featuring music, art, poetry, dance, and more. This special event, “Black History in Labor and in Motion,” runs 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Senior High School, 1799 Lehigh Station Road, Henrietta. Doors open at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 27.
Regular Comptroller Audit Completed
Representatives from the New York State Comptroller’s Office visited Rush-Henrietta to perform a scheduled audit. We are pleased to report the auditors found no evidence of abuse, waste, or fraud during their review. The audit looked at all of our financial areas and focused on credit cards and purchase cards used between July 2022 and September 2024. Audits typically are completed every five to seven years. They give the state with a way to provide targeted feedback regarding a school district’s financial practices and make suggestions for improvement or efficiencies.
The Comptroller’s Office released its final report regarding Rush-Henrietta in January 2025. The audit found that not all credit card and purchase card charges “were properly approved and supported.” The district acknowledges that its documentation processes can be improved and looks forward to refining practices regarding credit cards and purchase cards.
R-H Works Continues Building Partnerships
Established last year, R-H Works brings together influential business and industry leaders, K-12 and post-secondary educators, and community leaders to engage in dynamic discussions about the skills and attributes that will be essential for the workforce of the future. For the second time in the past month, attendees visited the district to talk about how to strengthen partnerships with local businesses and higher education, as well as developing and expanding career pathways.
Our second annual R-H Works Industry Breakfast will be held Friday, March 21. Local business leaders are encouraged to register to attend by visiting rhnet.org/rhworksevent today!Upcoming Meetings
It is important to be involved in our school district! Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings.Rush-Henrietta Board of Education
