    Hello Roth Families and Friends,

Though the cool spring rain has dampened our roads and yards, preparation for our final month has stayed plenty warm at Roth Junior High. Teachers in every classroom and content area are in the closing stages of their scope and sequence. Students have largely figured out the expectations, hopes, and well wishes that all of our faculty and staff have for them. Our counselors, social workers, and many others are helping students prepare for the transition to the next grade. For our 9th graders, this will also be their farewell tour of Roth before transitioning to the Senior High School. Lots of forward-moving momentum as we enjoy the weekend.

On this Memorial Day weekend, I’d like to give thanks to our military veterans and current service members in the greater Roth community. The sacrifice of the many who came before us paved the way for the opportunities and access that we have today. Last week’s trip to Washington, D.C. was a timely opportunity to remind us all – students and chaperones alike – that the freedoms we enjoy (and continue to work for) today were made possible by those who serve/d these United States of America. Thank you for your service.

The sun will shine. Soon. Until the yards (and playing fields) dry up, we get the opportunity to spend time indoors. Let’s help our students use any indoor time as a chance to reflect on the same four questions I shared last week: How am I feeling today? What are my goals for tomorrow? Do I feel supported? Do I feel valued? We are better able to serve and care for others when we are right with ourselves. Together, let’s continue Roth’s rise to excellence.

Here are some upcoming events and reminders.

Outstanding Performance: Over the past two weeks, we have had some exciting achievements by our students. Rush-Henrietta's band, chorus, and orchestra student musicians performed exceptionally well during the NYSSMA Major Organization Festival. Specific congratulations to Roth’s Band 8/9 and 7th Grade Band ensembles who each received recognition for their performances. Band 8/9 earned a Silver, and 7th Grade Band earned a Gold!

Additionally, one of our 9th graders had his 8-bit Animated Landscape entered into the 19th Annual Digital Media Festival (aka the Digies) hosted by Genesee Valley BOCES. And, Bingkun Wang’s piece placed in the Top 3 of that category. Well done Bingkun! And to all of our celebrated performers and artists: thank you for being a part of Roth’s rise to excellence.

End of Year Schedule: As we prepare our students for these final weeks together, teachers have been sharing what the final two weeks in June will look like. After June 16, our 8th and 9th graders will come in only for scheduled Regents exams. Our 7th graders will be on a half-day cycle up until their very last day. Here are some helpful resources to understand what those weeks will look like. *Please note: this will be an excellent opportunity for families to use our new StopFinder App to track bus routes and locations. Primary contacts should have already received information to sign up; but, please call our Transportation Center at (585) 359-5380 if you have questions. **Also, please note that our 7th graders will not begin their school day until 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 23.

    Regents/Exam Schedule (Grades 8 and 9)

    Grade 7 Year-End Schedule

A Sparkling Starry Night, Semi-Formal: Roth freshmen are invited to attend our semi-formal Friday, May 30. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. This year’s theme is “A Sparkling Starry Night.” Tickets are $10 per person. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Tickets are on sale through Friday, May 30, and will be available during lunch. Roth 9th graders who plan to invite a 9th grader from a different school can pick up a Guest Form from the main office. No tuxedos or ball gowns required. Put on your best business-casual attire and be ready to dance the night away.

Here is a message from our Parent Group President, Sarah Johnson, to any families able to contribute toward this great event: The 9th Grade Dance event is coming up soon! Please visit our Sign Up Genius page if you would like to donate snacks and water for the dance. All items need to be sent into the Roth Jr. High Main Office between now and May 28. Please label anything you send in with ‘9th Grade Dance.’ For more information, and to learn of other donation options please click here. As always, thank you so much for your donations and help! The more physical donations you make, the less I have to haul from Costco.”

Awards Ceremony & NJHS Induction: On back-to-back evenings, I am grateful for the privilege to honor so many of our students and to celebrate their accomplishments with their families. The celebration kicks off with our Roth Junior High Awards Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3. Academic and character awards will be presented at this event, and student award recipients will be receiving a Save-the-Date next week. The next evening will honor Roth’s newest members of our National Junior Honor Society. The NJHS Induction Ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4. Similar Save-the-Dates have already been mailed home. Congratulations to all of Roth’s shining stars.

Student Council Kickball Game: Please check out the following announcement about another upcoming event with and for our students. “Student Council is hosting a student/staff kickball game on Friday, June 6. Students who wish to participate must complete and submit the run-around sheet to Mrs. Biata or Ms. Flood by Wednesday, June 4. Students who wish to play need to be back at Roth at 5:50 p.m. June 6. We will be done at 7:30 p.m. Parents/guardians and families are encouraged to stay and enjoy the game.”

Rush-Henrietta Kicking Hunger 5K on June 7: The annual 5K race is coming up soon! Sponsored by the Rush-Henrietta Athletic Association, in conjunction with the Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal (RHAFT) and the town of Henrietta Recreation Department, this event provides financial support for the R-H school food pantry located in the Good Shepherd building. The 8th annual event will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Veterans Memorial Park in Henrietta. There will be food, drinks, awards, and a participant raffle to follow. There is also a virtual option to be part of this community event. For more information or to register, visit the race website by clicking here. We hope to see you on race day!

Roth Freshmen Lock-In: If your 9th grader has ever wanted to roam Roth’s halls after-hours to see what happens when the lights go out, this event is for them. This event will run from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday, June 13. Freshmen will be able to celebrate the close of their Roth chapter by viewing the sunset from our beautiful campus fields. If the weather cooperates, we’ll use flashlights to participate in some fun outside games and enjoy snacks. Who knows? Maybe we can do s’mores! This event is limited to Roth Junior High freshmen. Tickets are $10 and will be on sale during lunches the week prior.
