What will we learn in 7th and 8th grade Social Studies?

In a nutshell, I tell all parents and students to think of 7th and 8th grade Social Studies as a one-year course, but taught in two years!  Here's how it works...In 7th grade, we cover units starting with Geography and the First Americans( Prehistory) and continued on to the Civil War(1865) and Reconstruction of the U.S. (1877).  In 8th grade, your child will start the year with a recap of the Civil War(1865) and continue on into American History till present day! PHEW...that's a TON of American History!  In other words, everything we do in 7th grade will be a building block for 8th grade!

As you read over each unit, you will find the description based on the new NYS K-12 Social Studies Framework and NYS Next Generation Standards.  Let me know if you have any questions!  For more information on the new standards free to check:

    GRADE INFORMATION!

As we prepare for future common assessments, we wanted parents to know how testing is changing in New York state. Not only are tests becoming more challenging, but they are also assessing more than just content.  As testing and data have influenced our instruction to become more rigorous, so too do they influence our assessments to become more rigorous. Social studies tests not only assess social studies content knowledge but also literacy skills and thinking skills.  As a result, these exams have become more difficult for students to prepare for.

At the same time, we also need to keep in mind the district’s 80% 20% grading policy. As a result, unit tests will constitute the majority of your student’s quarter grade in social studies class. Since this is a unit test, students are not able to retake the assessment. Review packets are given one week before all exams. Students will have the opportunity to work on them during class and have them looked over before each test. Review sheets will contain both content and skills-based questions.

Students should prepare for their unit test by…

    1. Completing their review packet.

    2. Review their notes, assignments, quizzes, and classwork activities.

    3.  Seeing me with any questions or topics that they are struggling with.

    4. Come to at least ONE review session!

When thinking about quarter grades, please also keep the following in mind.

    1.     Students can retake any RCA.

    2.     Students can redo homework assignments to improve their understanding.

    3.     The School Tool is a valuable tool for staying up to date on student progress.
