Hello Roth Families and Friends,It has been an excellent start to the school year. Students have done a really nice job adjusting to the routine and expectations of the school day. And I have had the opportunity to get into classrooms and see how excited and energetic teachers are to have our students back. Roth is on the rise.
Please make some time this weekend to ask your student/s how their first few days of school went. What questions do they still have? What are their goals and hopes for this new school year? Please encourage your student/s – our students – to share with a trusted adult at Roth so that we can offer appropriate support and resources. And if you have any questions, please send me an email at: ohussain@rhnet.org
Here are some upcoming events and reminders, and an early plug for our yearbook.
Roth Parent Group: Our first meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday September 16. This will be a hybrid meeting, and I will provide a Google Meet link in next week’s E-News. I hope to meet many of you there (either in our large conference room or online), as we shape new opportunities to partner and engage.
Cell Phone & Device Policy: Students are really rising to this expectation. When I walk into the cafeteria, I see students engaged in conversation, quietly reading a book, or doodling. Faculty and staff will be consistent about messaging expectations, and we will work with families to help students “unplug to connect.” Please join us in reinforcing our policy by re-reading and sharing this blurb: Though the slogan for our policy is similar to years past – “Unplug to Connect” and “Off and Away During the Day” – I want to highlight an important expectation. Students should store their cell phones and personal devices in their lockers. At Roth JHS, this applies to all scheduled classes, lunch and study halls. To “unplug to connect,” we must first unplug. Students have done a nice job responding to the messaging and expectation. Staff will continue to model and remind, and building leaders will step in as needed. However, it is my belief that our greatest allies in this effort are our students’ families. Thank you in advance for your support.
Update to Open House: Please be advised that our Open House will run at the time published on our district calendar, and not on the start-of-year mailer you received from us. I apologize for the confusion. Per the district calendar, this year’s event (Roth Open House Block Party) will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday September 18. Additionally, there will be a Washington, DC, trip informational meeting immediately following Open House, starting promptly at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. We look forward to welcoming you to Roth.
Free Little Library: Please read the following message from one of our incredible student teachers, Ms. Callear, regarding our revamped Free Little Library. If you or someone you know has Young Adult books that you are willing to donate, please consider stopping by our Open House: Do you have any books you would like to get rid of? We are currently taking in well-loved books for our Free Little Library that resides outside the school entrance in order to refurbish and give it new life! Any donations will be accepted in a dropbox at the Roth Open House on September 18. Thank you in advance and hope to see you there!
Washington, D.C., Club Trip 2025: This information applies to our 8th graders. The trip will be limited to the first 90 students who turn in their first payment, blue form and yellow registration form (completed correctly). There will be a waiting list if there is interest beyond the 90-seat capacity for the buses. This will be used on a first-come first-served basis. The informational meeting will be at 7 p.m. on the same night as our Open House.

I will close by expressing gratitude for your support of and commitment to our students’ educational journey. The path to excellence for each of our students will benefit tremendously from an active home-school partnership. I look forward to working with you, and our kids.
Sincerely,
Omar Hussain
