    Consumer Science



    Welcome to Family and Consumer Science for the 2018-2019 School Year!


    Family and Consumer Science is a course designed to help students live in a society of constant change and to improve their quality of life by preparing  them to meet their present and future responsibilities as family  and community members, consumers, home managers, and wage earners. The goal is to educate early adolescents to think constructively, make sound decisions, solve problems, and manage resources. Students are expected to be actively involved in learning in a participatory, supportive environment and to have the opportunity to practice and to develop the process skills as related to the content topics. The use of real-life relevant tasks, laboratories, and simulations are an integral part of the course as is the use of research, class discussions and group activities.




    Classroom Policies:

    FACS is the ideal setting for differentiated instruction. It is the district’s initiative to respond to students educational needs in a manner that accepts individual differences and supports a successful learning experience. Whole group and small group instruction addresses many different learning styles.


    Course Grades:

    Grading for this course is based on a combination of assessments that evaluate the learning performance and support the Common Core. There will be reading, writing, and math expectations as well as content specific standards the Home and Careers students are required to meet. Student performance is assessed based on current grading protocols: 80% Required Course Assessments and 20% Formative Assessments.


    Specific Course Units:

    FACS is organized around the four process skills of communication, leadership, management, and thinking.

    7th grade students will have FACS for 20 weeks and will have the opportunity to explore careers, using a sewing machine, and foods and nutrition with an emphasis on food safety and sanitation.

    8th grade students will have FACS for the whole year. Students will have the opportunity to explore career and college programs, financial management ,child and human development, consumerism and design, advanced food and nutrition,  and food science.
