Friday, April 25, 2025Hello Roth Families and Friends,
We had a full week at Roth Junior High. Teachers have set high expectations for this final quarter, as we push our students to finish the year strong. After-school clubs were back up and running after break. Special props to our Diversity Club for their welcoming and affirming chalk messages (in many different languages)! Our fields, courts and track have been busy with practices, games, matches, and meets. Our next group of 7th graders from Sherman got their first feel of the expectations, support, and pace of the transition to Junior High. It has been a full week, and like every other since September, there have been moments to celebrate and opportunities to do better.
I want to continue to encourage our young scholars to show up to school day in and day out ready to learn. Ready to participate in the work of becoming more responsible, strategic, independent, and motivated learners. An important part of our success is limiting distractions. Please remind your student/s about our personal device policy. All personal devices should be stored in student lockers for the duration of the school day. I’ll roll back the tape to the fall: to unplug to connect, we must first unplug.
So let’s go. My goal is to continue the fulfilling, important, and hard work of helping Roth Junior High rise to new heights. I want our students, families, and staff to wear our gear and walk our halls with tremendous pride. I want us to be willing and open to call out the areas that still need work. And, I want us to come together, roll up our sleeves, and contribute to Roth’s rise to excellence.
Upcoming and News
Attention 8th Grade Washington DC Parents and Guardians: We are only a few weeks away from our trip. Here are a few reminders. There will be a final informational meeting for students, parents, guardians, and chaperones at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the Roth Auditorium. Please do your best to be there. At that meeting, we will discuss last-minute topics, you can meet the chaperones, and we will discuss packing, weather, and answer any/all of your questions.
Also, please join the Washington DC Remind class by using this link: remind.com/join/c648f83
Or, you can send a text to 81010 with the message of @c648f83 to join. We will use the Remind messaging app to communicate with home while we are away. You can text chaperones through this messaging system in an emergency situation. Moving forward, this is how information will be shared with families between now and the trip.
A Sparkling Starry Night, Semi-Formal: Roth freshmen are invited to attend our Semi-Formal Friday, May 30. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. This year’s theme is “A Sparkling Starry Night.” Tickets are $10 per person. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Tickets will be on sale Monday, May 19, through Friday, May 30, during lunch. Be sure to buy your ticket in advance as no tickets will be sold the night of the event. This event is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a night of dancing and fun with your friends before making the leap to the Senior High School. No tuxedos or ballroom gowns required. Put on your best business-casual attire. The goal is to have a blast without breaking the bank – save the formal wear for your Junior Prom and Senior Ball.
Incoming-7th Grade Meeting: Here is the presentation from Monday night’s Incoming-7th Grade informational meeting. Growing up, I moved around a lot. I developed skills that helped me transition from school to school, each time that my family moved. Sometimes, I take that for granted. To our families and friends at Sherman: please know that we will work hard to support your student’s transition from 6th to 7th grade. We are excited to welcome a new group to our rise.
Transition to High School (Roth and SHS): Here is the presentation from Wednesday night’s Transition-to-High School informational meeting. As I mentioned at the event: I am not the expert, and my perspective is not the only one you should consider when planning for these critical four years. I am, however, always willing to contribute my experience and lessons learned along the way. And, like I said on Wednesday: best of luck to our outgoing 9th graders. I am sad to have only had one year working with you, and I am grateful to have played even a minor role in your story.
Upcoming Math State Test: In two weeks, our 7th and 8th graders will sit for the New York State Mathematics exam. On the mornings of Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7, students will have an opportunity to showcase their skills. Our students did a fantastic job responding to the challenges presented during the English Language Arts assessment period. It is our hope that this next experience goes smoothly. Good luck to all of our student scholars!
Let’s Celebrate our Teachers: Please read below for a message from our Parent Group President, Sarah Johnson.
Hello Roth families! We need your help. The Roth Parent Group puts on a Staff Appreciation Brunch each May to thank all of the staff, teachers, and bus drivers who work with our kids throughout the year. This year’s celebration is on May 8. There are many ways to contribute to this celebration including making or bringing in food items, donating funds toward food expenses, setup/clean up, and working the event the day of.
If you have a restaurant in the area and would like to donate food or offer reduced rates, we will be happy to work with you in advertising your business the day of the event and on the Roth Facebook page.
We are accepting monetary donations through Venmo: @SarahJohnson44. The sign-up for food donations can be found here and on the Roth Facebook page. You are welcome to communicate questions or messages through the Facebook page as well. Thank you all so much!
