• Students in the Intermediate grades (grades 4, 5, 6) can choose to participate in the following before-school music ensembles: Band, Orchestra, and/or Chorus.  Students at this level may begin learning to play a band OR orchestra instrument and/or may sing in the chorus. To support their participation, the district is providing morning buses for students in the Intermediate Music Program. There is also wrap-around child care (Cub Care) available for those days when students are not in their music classes.

SHERMAN: Ensembles meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays , and Fridays from 8:10 to 9:10 a.m. Note that we have added a section of 4th grade Band on Monday to accommodate a high level of interest.

VOLLMER: Ensembles meet Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:10 to 9:10 a.m.

  • Below is more detailed information, by grade level.

    FOURTH (4th) GRADE

Students entering fourth grade in the fall chose their ensemble and instrument last spring.

If you did not register last spring and you are still interested in your child participating in any of the 4th grade music ensembles,  please talk to your music teacher.

Instruments that students may choose from are:  Orchestra: violin, viola, cello, bass   Band: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, french horn, baritone, tuba, percussion

*Please note: Due to their size, some instruments are not able to be safely transported on regular RH school bus runs. Large instruments will need to be transported to and from school on lesson and ensemble days.  Depending on school inventory, students can sometimes keep their large instrument at home and transport just the mouthpieces and music, however, this is not guaranteed.  See your child's music teacher for more information.

Large instruments NOT allowed on buses: baritone, tuba, cello, french horn, string bass

    FIFTH (5th) GRADE

Students who will be entering fifth grade in the fall, have the same options as they have had in the past (band, orchestra, chorus). These ensembles will continue to meet before the school day begins, one time per week from 8:10-9:10am.  Students in this grade may continue studying their orchestra instrument, they may begin a band instrument, and/or they may join the chorus.

A frequently asked question is "Can I switch from my orchestra instrument to a band instrument in fifth grade?" Yes, however there are many considerations when making this decision. Please contact your child's teacher to discuss this option. They can help guide you! Contact information is located at the bottom of this page.

    SIXTH (6th) GRADE

**Please note that students in band and orchestra who will be entering sixth grade in the fall must provide their own instrument for music study with the exception of the following instruments, which may be available for rent from the school:

ORCHESTRA - cello and string bass

BAND - baritone, tuba, french horn, trombone, tenor saxophone

*If your child plays one of these instruments, please contact your child's instrumental teacher directly to confirm that an instrument is available for them in sixth grade.

If a student has never participated in the instrumental program (band or orchestra) and would like to join, please contact the music teacher in your current school (contact information below).

If you have any questions, please contact your child's Instrumental teacher or their Chorus teacher.  You may also feel free to contact the Director of Music, Mark MacMillan (mmacmillan@rhnet.org, #359-5056)
