The district provides two resources, which are online math-practice tools that leverage students’ love of gaming to build skills and create high levels of engagement. Both of these resources will help to build fluidity of number, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Home support is an essential component of the educational process. Please encourage your student to spend 10 to 15 minutes of math exploration each day.
First in math was developed by the originator of the 24-Game. The online games are difficult enough to hold their interest but not so difficult that they give up in frustration. We have found that once students start First in math they want to practice willingly, the way they do for sports! The program also provides a family login so you can compete with your student. Please visit their Family/Parent Connection Page to learn more.
Last year we had a team of R-H Students Shine at State Math Tournament for First in math!!
Leary third graders Tessa, Keith, and Spencer competed on June 1, 2023 in the First in Math State Tournament in Albany. Cheered on by their parents and Leary Teacher Ms. Tran, the young mathematicians placed fourth out of the 10 third-grade teams at the competition! The New York State Education Department partnered with First In Math for the tournament. The students won the regional qualifying event in order to earn a spot at the state tournament, which saw each team of three students working together on grade-appropriate math challenges. The students even met Robert Sun, First In Math/24 Game inventor, who signed their board! The i-Ready program includes learning games which provide fun, engaging practice in the mathematics they are learning at school. If your student is interested in utilizing the program at home, please have them engage in a learning game that is appropriate for their grade level. You can learn more about each of the games by visiting Learning Games
