Implementation of Standards in Rush-Henrietta

History:

  •  The NYS Learning Standards for Health Education, Physical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences were adopted by the NYS Board of Regents in 1996. The standards are based on NYS standards and national standards.


  • In 2005, NYSED published a guidance document for achieving NYS standards in health education.


  • In 2018, NYSED & Mental Health Association of NYS collaborated to develop guidance resources to implement the new mental health law. All schools in NYS are required to include mental in the health curriculum.


History:

  •  The RHCSD implemented its first NYS Learning Standards for health education, physical education (PE), and family and consumer sciences (FACS) aligned units in the 1999-2000 school year. Summer curriculum teams have continued to write, revise, and update curriculum in health, PE, and FACS since the implementation began in 1996.

  • Health education curriculum was revised to align with the 2005 NYSED guidance document.


  • RHCSD health teachers and elementary school nurse teachers have worked as curriculum writing teams during the summer of 2018 and throughout the 2018-19 school year  to include the nine core elements of mental health curriculum recommended by NYSED & Mental Health Association of NYS.

Framework of the NGLS:

  •  In 2018, NYSED began a review of  National and New York State Learning Standards in Physical Education. The process is still underway.


Framework of the NGLS:

  •  Once NYSED publishes the results of its review of physical education standards, the RHCSD will align our curriculum with any recommended changes and begin implementation.

"Shifts" Associated with the NGLS:

  •  Mental Health is the current shift in health education. Shifts in PE & FACS TBA


Emphasized "Shifts":

  •  RHCSD has included nine core elements to our health curriculum (as follows):

Core elements in school mental health (age/grade appropriate, K-12)

1. The concept of wellness including self-care and personal responsibility for one’s own mental health and wellness.

2. The concept of mental health as an integral part of health.

3. The recognition of the signs and symptoms of developing mental health problems.

4. Instruction in the awareness and management of mental health crises such as the risk of suicide, self-harm and other mental health crises.

5. The relationship between mental health, substance use and other negative coping behaviors.

6. The negative impact of stigma and cultural attitudes toward mental illness on treatment seeking behavior and as a contributing factor in discrimination against people with mental illnesses.

7. The concept of recovery from mental illness.

8. The implications of risk factors, protective factors and resiliency on wellness, mental health and recovery.

9. Instruction in identifying appropriate professionals, services and family/social supports for treating and maintaining recovery from mental illness.
