Test Accommodations

ESL students must take the same tests as other high school students to receive their high school diploma. The federal and state governments have set up guidelines for second language learners.
For all Regents State exams and our local exams, the ESL students can take their exam in a separate location, usually in the ESL room. They can use a bilingual glossary and receive extended time. The English 11 Regents can have a third reading of the Listening Passage.
ESL students who have become proficient can still receive the test accommodations for another two years. This is a new regulation from New York state that was modified a few years ago.
If you have ESL students in your class, be sure to stop by the ESL room while the exam is going on to check on them.
You may find that when giving Unit Tests in your classroom that the ESL students may not finish at the end of the block. Mainly this is because they are reading and thinking in a second language and the processing time can take longer. You can arrange to have students finish their test at a later time or bring the test to the ESL room (E-100-A) and we'll see that they finish it in a timely manner.
Talk with the ESL teacher if you're unsure of these modifications or if you want to try something else.
