3/27/24 A Day
This week is spirit week! It's the Roth Total Eclipse Spirit Week! Hopefully you remembered that today is "Total Darkness Blackout Day" or "Wear all black" day.
Tomorrow is Our spirit cannot be eclipsed Day. Wear Green and Gold!
Eclipse totalities are different lengths. The reason the total phases of solar eclipses vary in time is because Earth is not always at the same distance from the Sun, and the Moon is not always the same distance from Earth.
Clubs
The Academic Challenge Bowl team finished off the season with another big win. They beat Bloomfield in a close match 100-90. Top scorers of the day were Kayden Thomas, Bella Lugo, and Alyssa Rosario. Also scoring points for the team was Lulya Abel, Naomi Teshome, and Isabella Serafine-Jehlen. Congrats on a great season for the whole team!!
Music
Yesterday's "Music in Our Schools" question was, "Who wrote Rhapsody in Blue?" The answer is: George Gerswhin. Written in 1924 for solo piano and jazz band. The piece combines elements of classical music with jazz influence. Today's question is: Who played the role of Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked? Listen tomorrow for the answer!
3/26/24 B Day
This week is spirit week! It's the Roth Total Eclipse Spirit Week! Hopefully you remembered that today is "Wear your PJ's" day. Thanks!!! Tomorrow is Total Darkness, blackout day. Wear all black!
Did you know the Moon, directly between the Sun and Earth, casts a shadow on our planet. If you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse and the Moon has to be between the Sun and Earth for a solar eclipse to occur. The only lunar phase when that happens is New Moon.

3/25/24 A Day
This week is spirit week! It's the Roth Total Eclipse Spirit Week! Did you know this will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 7 years. The last one occurred August 21, 2017. It crossed the country from Oregon to South Carolina, and millions of people viewed it successfully. Before that one, you have to go back to February 26, 1979. And it will be 20 years until the next one: August 23, 2044.
Hopefully you remembered that today is "don't throw shade" day. Be kind to others and wear your sunglasses. Please listen to your teachers if they ask you to take the sunglasses off during instruction. Thanks!!!
Tomorrow is PJ Day - it will be dark during the eclipse, so why not wear your PJs and be comfy?!

Black Girl Magic and Coach Allen would like to highlight and celebrate John Lewis.
As we leave the inspiring month of February, we take this opportunity to pay tribute to the exemplary life and legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis. John Lewis stands among those whose unwavering commitment to justice and civil rights continues to inspire us all.
John Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, in Troy, Alabama. He attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary, and went on to enroll at Fisk University, in Nashville, to earn a degree in religion and philosophy. John Lewis, often referred to as the "Conscience of the Congress," was a tireless advocate for equality, justice, and nonviolent activism. His courage, resilience, and dedication to the principles of freedom and equality have left an indelible mark on the fabric of American history.
John Lewis Served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. Lewis wrote. “What am I? I am a man who deeply believes in compassion and hope. A man who believes we can move beyond the anger, hatred and attacks that have assaulted our nation’s psyche. A man who, day after day, struggles to build the bridges that will allow us all to come together in Dr. King’s beloved community.”
Together let us all honor John Lewis as we celebrate Black History today and everyday.

Black Girl Magic would like to highlight and celebrate Garrett Morgan.
Born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877, Garrett Augustus Morgan was the seventh of 11 children. A prolific inventor who called himself the “Black Edison,” Garrett Morgan created early versions of the traffic light and gas mask. He began his career as a sewing-machine mechanic before patenting an improved sewing machine design and a hair-straightening product. He established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company and sold the cream to African Americans. His breathing device, known as a safety hood, provided the blueprint for World War I gas masks. The invention earned him the first prize at the Second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation in New York City.
The first Black man in Cleveland to own a car, Morgan worked on his mechanical skills and developed a friction drive clutch. Then, in 1923, he created a new kind of traffic signal, one with a warning light to alert drivers that they would need to stop. Morgan sold the rights to General Electric for $40,000. In 2005, Morgan was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio. The Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation in the city is named in his honor.

Black Girl Magic would like to highlight and celebrate founder of Black Girl Magic and 9th grade student Red Shumaker.
Red was born November 11, 2009 and is Ethiopian. She lives with her mother and two younger sisters. Red enjoys hanging with her friends, going to the movies and playing basketball. Red is a member of two basketball teams, The Rockets and The Wheels. Red’s friends describe her as funny, supportive, pretty and an overall good person. Her teachers say she is one of the best, is a hard worker, kind, and a natural leader.
Red was recently interviewed by WHAM 13 news for her participation and passion for wheelchair basketball. She is the winner of the 2024 National Girls & Women in Sports Day Annual Essay Contest inviting girls grades K-12 to share their stories, ideas, and experiences in sport.
As part of her essay, Red wrote, “On the court I’m just me. The version of me I wish I could be with everyone. The version of me I wish people knew. The version of me I wish people asked about. Wheelchair basketball means the world to me because I can be the version of me that I love. I’m not saying that I don’t love every part of me, but loving the part of me that is competitive and is a winner, mindlessly and strategically playing the game, is my favorite part. We fall, we foul, we shoot and the crowd goes wild. I never miss, I guess you could say.” Red hopes to be a motivational speaker in the future and help inspire others.

We are lucky enough to have a sneak peek a the musical, Spongebob Squarepants on Friday! Please keep this in mind:
~Sit with your class. Follow your teachers directions.~Leave backpacks and personal items in the classrooms.~No talking or whispering. This is disrespectful to the actors.~If your friend or someone you know is in the musical, please don't shout out their names. This will distract them and may cause them to forget their lines.~If you're not interested in the musical, just sit quietly.~No bathroom or water breaks during the assembly.~Phones and ear pods away.~No food or drinks are allowed in the auditorium.~It's ok to laugh and clap but do so for an appropriate amount of time. About 10-15 seconds. No need to get carried away with excessive clapping. This will delay the performance for our actors.Clubs

Great final game last night for the RH freshmen football team as they went on the road to beat the McQuaid Knights 22-7. 3 passing touchdowns were scored overall from quarterback Parker Zugoni to Anthony Valenti for 2 and Ryder Zuchegno for 1. Jayden Peters had an impressive game running the ball down the field to our RH in great positions to score. Defense fought hard all game. Many big tackles were made by Jaden Clevelend, Tyler Clevelend, and the rest of the Royal Comet defense. Griffen Freeman got an interception and Giuseppe Sutton finished the game with a nice tipped pass! The Freshmen football team finished this season 5-2
