2ND GRADE

  •

The 2nd grade students continue from the base of knowledge that was established in 1st grade.  The rhythm work begins with a review of beat and moves quickly into the study of quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests.  The half note and half note rest will be added in later months.  The melody patterns of so-mi and so-la-mi are reviewed and  the pitches mi-re-do are introduced.  The students have many opportunities to perform music that is written in two parts.  We call this harmony.    Students experience music through activities that involve movement, improvisation, reading, writing and performing.  The curriculum includes studies of "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and music from a variety of other styles.  They also learn to play, sing and improvise using an introduction, coda (ending), AB and ABA form.

The 2nd grade students perform a musical in March.
