Unit E: Geometry

  • Listed below are the NYS Grade 6 Common Core Performance Standards for Unit E: Geometry.

With each Performance Standard are "I Can Statements" students work on throughout the course of the Unit. At the end of the Unit, the students will be assessed on their ability to perform the actions in each "I Can Statement."

    Finally, under the
"I Can Statements" are a list of Topics. You will find extra practice resources, videos, class notes, and homework answers by clicking on the appropriate link.

    6.G.1
Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

"I Can Find the Area of Squares, Rectangles, Parallelograms, Triangles, and Trapezoids using the Appropriate Formula."

"I Can Find the Area of Regular and Irregular Figures by Decomposing them into Rectangles and Triangles."

"I Can Find the Area of the Shaded Region by Subtracting the Smaller Area from the Larger Area."

    6.G.2
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V = lwh and V = Bh to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the contest of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

    6.G.3
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining point with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

"I Can Draw Polygons in the Coordinate Plane and Use Various Strategies to Calculate the Area of the Polygon and Determine the Lengths of the Sides to Find the Perimeter of the Polygon."

    6.G.4
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real0world and mathematical problems.

"I Can Identify Faces, Edges, and Vertices of 3D Figures."
