The Daily 5 is a series of literacy activities detailed in The Daily 5 Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. During Readers Workshop students are working independently and the teacher works with guided reading groups.
The five components of Daily Five are:
Reading to self
Students practice reading skills and strategies with a "Good Fit" book to build reading stamina and improve as a reader.
Writing
Students practice writing applying the skills and strategies learned in Writers Workshop.
Word study
Students explore and play with letter patterns to build words, expand vocabulary and learn correct spelling.
Reading with a partner
Students read with a partner, practicing decoding strategies, fluency and checking each others comprehension.
Listen to reading
Students
will listen to stories on tape or on the computer. Students will hear
fluent reading, expand their vocabulary and build their reading stamina.
