There are many different strategies when they get stuck on a word. Guide your child by asking them to think about the words they are reading by using these three questions: What sounds right? What looks right? What makes sense?
Talk to your child about what they already know about the topic of a story, before reading. Also, look at the pictures in the book before reading, to assist with decoding unfamiliar words.
When emergent readers come to a word they do not know, cover part of the word and slide over so the student can break the word down into sounds.
