Writing Workshop

  • During writing workshop students work through the writing process while trying to apply the 6+1 writing traits:

    • brainstorming - coming up with ideas to write about (ideas trait)
    • prewriting -using a graphic organizer to plan out writing (organization trait)
    • first draft (sloppy copy) - writing the piece for the first time, focus being on getting ideas down on paper (voice trait)
    • revise - changing or adding to the piece to improve it (word choice & sentence fluency traits)
    • partner edit - working with a partner to correct mistakes (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc...) (conventions trait)
    • publish - writing a final copy ready for readers to see, done neatly (presentation trait)



       
    Students will continue to practice opinion, narrative, and informational types of writing.  Throughout the year students will be asked to respond to different prompts, using information from text to answer in the response.
