Fifth Grade Band Expectations: Grading, Behavior and Practice

  • Playing Expectations

    A.    Attend all concerts and rehearsals.

    B.    Attend all lessons unless absent from school. If your lesson is during an activity or class test you cannot miss, see me first thing in the morning so we can plan another lesson time for that day.  No make-ups are needed for lessons missed due to NYS Tests.

    C.    If you are absent on a lesson day, keep learning the same assignment from the last lesson you were at.

    D.   Spend most of your time practicing the new music assignments. Older music can be played as a warm up or reward for practicing new material.

    E.    Bring all Supply List equipment to every lesson and band rehearsal.

    F.    Be responsible for all materials assigned during the school year, including replacement of broken or lost items.

    Grading

Band students will receive an Instrumental Progress Grade at the end of every quarter as part of the school's Progress Report.  Your child will receive either a 1 (Below Standard), 2 (Working Towards Standard), 3 (Meeting Standard), or 4 (Exceeding Standard) for the following 2 areas:  Effort and Proficiency.  Your child may also receive comments.

    Behavior Expectations
Student conduct is an important piece for an effective learning environment. PBIS traits apply.

    Practice Expectations

    A.    The district recommends 20 minutes of practice every day.
    B.    Practice enough so that you can play your current assignment with ease.  If you are having trouble with part of the assignment then come to your next lesson with specific questions on that portion, but be able to play the rest of the assignment.
    C.     The more you play, the more fun it becomes!  It's better to practice for many short sessions instead of a couple long sessions. You'll get used to playing more easily.  You'll also develop the coordination and muscles you need in your hands, lips, and arms more quickly.  Yes... lips have many muscles!!!
