Remembering R-H Bus Driver Curt Waringa

With tremendous sadness, the Rush-Henrietta Central School District shares the passing of longtime bus driver, Curt Waringa. Curt drove Bus 521, transporting Burger, Fyle Leary, and Vollmer students.

“Curt was an important part of our district’s transportation team for many years, successfully getting thousands of students to and from school safely each day,” says Shirley Smith-Gravanda, director of transportation. “He didn’t seek the spotlight. Curt was focused on his job and on the safety of the children.”

Curt’s service to our school community began 20 years ago this month, when Rush-Henrietta hired him as a substitute cleaner. In 2004, he became a substitute bus driver and, that same year, was hired as a full-time bus driver. Described as a gentleman by those who knew him, he held that position for 17 years.

The news of Curt’s passing leaves his family, friends, and colleagues in mourning. We ask that you join us in expressing support for his family during this challenging time. Curt’s wife, Linda Waringa, also was employed by Rush-Henrietta for many years. She worked in the main office at Fyle Elementary School from 2002 to 2016.

Diane McBride, president of the Board of Education, has known Curt for many years. He graduated from Rush-Henrietta in 1970, five years before McBride. When she saw Curt two weeks ago, he generously offered some produce from his garden. He also was a beekeeper, and people coveted the golden honey that he - and his hive - famously produced.

“Curt had a good sense of humor and he loved the children,” McBride says. “He was the kindest, most gentle person I ever knew.”

Rush-Henrietta is thankful for Curt’s many years of service to our school community.
