  • Building The Bridge To Literacy

"Be brave. Be bold. Be ready to rise to the challenge!"

"Use books to create the kind of community
you want your classroom to be."

    - Lucy CalkinsFounding Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, a New York City–based organization that has influenced literacy instruction around the globe for more than thirty years.

"Reading is like breathing in and
writing is like breathing out, and storytelling is what links both; it is the soul of literacy. The most powerful tool that we have to strengthen literacy is often the most underused and overlooked, and that is
    a child's own stories."
    - Pam Allyn, founding director of LitWorld

Gear up for summer writing with Writer's Notebooks!!
Our challenge is to make this fun and authentic.  I think we can all agree that we just want fun ways for kids to keep that pencil moving as a lifelong habit.

Also, feel free to share this AWESOME short video with our students featuring many, many wonderful ideas of how to get started with a writer's notebook. This video features a peek inside Ruth Ayres' notebook. Ruth is a blogger/teacher/writing coach for a school district in Northern Indiana. So many of the ideas in this video integrate art, science, and everyday life.

There's also a Padlet from Amy VanDerwater's website with book titles where the characters keep notebooks and live "writerly" lives!!
