What Does a Deputy Superintendent Do?

Rush-Henrietta's deputy superintendent has many responsibilities. In this role, Shanie Keelean oversees all departments listed to the left on this page.

A primary role of the  deputy superintendent is to provide coaching to both principals and assistant principals. That is necessary because each leader at R-H, no matter how experienced, needs to remain a learner. Professional growth has been a key point of emphasis since Dr. Mullen’s arrival.

A significant amount of the deputy’s time is spent engaging in coaching with each principal and assistant principal to boost student achievement. The national organization New Leaders states: “Schoolwide systems for observation, coaching, and actionable feedback are often synonymous with instructional leadership and student gains. Two key ingredients include: 1) a targeted focus on rigorous instructional strategies and delivery and 2) systems that enable principals to monitor teacher practice over time and assess the impact of coaching on student achievement.”

R-H is committed to improving its instructional practices to better support students. The deputy is leading Professional Learning Communities, which now occur monthly for principals and assistant principals. This effort is a widely recognized strategy to develop school leaders and increase student achievement.

In addition, under the deputy's leadership, teachers are now playing a key role as members of the Instructional Leadership Team at each school. These teams are designed to support the successful implementation and monitoring of each school’s improvement plan. This effort is being led by the deputy superintendent.

The role also ensures that we have clear and effective policy implementation, which helps our district operate more efficiently and effectively for our students and community. This is directly aligned to the board’s goal of bringing district policies up to date.
