Transportation Overview

Getting students to and from school requires the creation of 580 routes and 8,938 stops. Routes are created based on attendance areas but shaped by “stops other than home” requested on more than 600 babysitting/split-custody forms received annually. These forms were due April 1. If you have not submitted your request, please send it to your child’s school main office immediately.

During the summer, dispatchers enter this information and create bus routes, which are evaluated for safety, accuracy, and efficiency. Bus drivers do trial runs of routes in mid-August and dispatchers make adjustments for the first day of school to provide the best possible service.

R-H bus mechanics work all year long to maintain the district’s fleet of vehicles. During the summer, they focus on body work, painting and repairing any damage these buses sustained during the school year. They also prepare new buses! Each new bus is inspected, both visually and mechanically, receives district decals, and is given a fire extinguisher, garbage can, security cameras and a safety device that reminds drivers to walk to the back of the bus and check for anything - or anyone - left behind.

Drivers and monitors also assist with washing and cleaning every district vehicle during the summer - including all 134 school buses! The crews arrive at 6 a.m. and spray, scrub, scrape, and sanitize buses inside and out until 2 p.m. each day. Everything from roof hatches to the dashboard to the aisle floor is cleaned to make sure that our buses are spotless and ready for the first day of school.
