Exceptions

Parents/guardians must submit a written request (email or letter) to the principal. The request should clearly state the specific reason for the exception and the anticipated duration. For requests related to medical needs, documentation must be submitted from an appropriately licensed medical professional* (e.g., psychiatrist, psychologist, or specialist). This documentation should: 

• Describe the medical or mental health need;
• Explain why the use of an internet-enabled device is necessary to meet that need; 
• Clarify why the need cannot be addressed with a non-internet-enabled device or a school-issued device. 

 *Notes from a primary care physician will not be accepted.

The principal or designee will review the request and may contact the parent/guardian for additional information or documentation, if needed. The school will work with the parent/guardian to address the needs through school-based interventions and supports.

Requests are reviewed as follows:

• Medical Needs: Also reviewed by the district medical director after documentation is submitted.
• Translation Needs: Reviewed by principal, assistant principal, and ENL teacher.
• Caregiving Needs: Reviewed by principal, assistant principal, and school counselor/social worker.
• Emergency Situations: Reviewed by principal, assistant principal, and other staff as needed.

The parent/guardian will be informed in writing whether the request was approved or denied. If approved, appropriate staff will be notified so that the student’s exception request is honored, and records will be kept in the school office/health office. 

If denied, the principal or designee will provide a written rationale for the denial that will include notice of the parent/guardian’s right to appeal to the assistant superintendent of Student and Family Services.

If a medical request cannot be addressed through school interventions or supports, a 504 referral will be initiated. Additionally, if the parent/guardian does not agree with the district’s proposed plan to address the student’s needs and instead requests a 504 Plan, the school will honor the request and move forward with the referral process. In some cases, while the 504 process is underway, the medical director and the director of Special Education will work with the building administration to determine any interim supports or plans needed to address the student’s needs.

All exception requests must be renewed annually.
