Welcome to English Language Arts!

Our goal in Rush-Henrietta is to expose students at all grade levels to regular and varied opportunities to read, write, listen, and speak across all content areas. The New York state standards for English Language Arts & Literacy are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the parameters issued by the states to create the next generation of K-12 standards in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school. These standards are:

(1) research- and evidence-based
(2) aligned with college and work expectations
(3) rigorous
(4) internationally benchmarked

In Rush-Henrietta, we know that the act of learning to read is a complicated, extensive process. Our focus is building both the word recognition strands and the language comprehension strands in our classrooms. The Reading Rope, created by Dr. Hollis Scarborough, captures the essence of this task.  One of the first and best infographics in the field, the Reading Rope is brilliant in its simplicity, but profound in its instructional implications.
