What a wonderful spring we have had so far. Luckily we had nice weather for our Spring Carnival and students have been able to get outside for recess. We have had a great 2009-2010 school year. The kids have had outstanding academic success. Staff has been working hard to meet each child’s needs and parents have been supporting learning at home and volunteering in school. Each month we have taken the opportunity to thank all of you for your volunteering efforts. These efforts continue to make Sherman a supportive, welcoming, and engaging learning environment for all.
One goal we will be working on next year is increasing attendance at PTA meetings. We will be looking for ideas on ways to do this at our first meeting in September. Attending PTA meetings is a way to build a positive partnership with Sherman, learn about what’s happening at school, and find out about how you can volunteer at school.
To conclude the year, I would like to celebrate our achievements and thank everyone for their contributions. Thanks to our parents for volunteering and organizing the following events. These are just a few of the many ways you make Sherman a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Spring Open House and Ice Cream Social
- Beginning-of-year staff lunch and May Staff Appreciation Lunch
- Help with our second grade musical
- PARP and VARP activities
- Supporting our visiting author this year
- PTA Book Fair and Family Fun Night
- Volunteering in many different ways in the classroom
- Making recess possible by coming in every day to help supervise students
- Chaperoning on field trips
- Spring Carnival
- Moving Up Night and Moving Up Lunch
- Grade 5 Pool Party
- Sharing important information at Parent Teacher Conferences
- Participating on district committees, including DPAC, BAC, and others.
- Participating on building committees, including PTA and SDM.
- Attending concerts and other building activities
- Volunteering at Kindergarten Story Hour and Kindergarten Orientation
- Completing online surveys and reading E-News and newsletters
- Reading and writing with your children every night!
- To our kindergartners who started school for the first time: You did a fantastic job learning to read, write, and become mathematicians and scientists.
- To our fifth graders (and their parents): For being ready to move on to their next educational challenge at Burger. Good luck and we will miss you. Be sure to come back and visit.
- For students who took state assessments this school year, tried their best, and did a fine job.
- For our musicians and artists who performed beautiful concerts and displayed amazing art work in school and at district shows.
- To our athletes who exercised and competed fairly during physical education class.
- To everyone for taking risks in school every day by asking questions and sharing your creative thinking with staff members and your parents.
- To everyone who earned a S.O.A.R. ticket for positive behavior and worked to “support others and act responsibly” every day.
Finally, thanks to staff for their hard work every day engaging students in the learning process and providing differentiated learning opportunities that support and challenge. Here are a few areas we emphasized in our academic program this school year:
- Providing parents with samples of student work during parent conferences to have a clear picture of student progress and help understand our revised progress report
- Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students. Including providing additional support for students not meeting standards and challenging students who are working above standard.
- Giving students pre-assessments, interest inventories, and strength-based interviews, to find ways to engage all students in the learning process.
- Implementing PBIS through our “Watch us S.O.A.R.” (Supporting Others and Acting Responsibly) system.
- Using technology within the classroom to enhance students’ learning experiences, including using computers for center-based instruction, distance learning, power point presentation, and presenting with LCD projectors and ELMOs.
- Working together as grade levels to look at student work, monitor progress quarterly, and plan instructional strategies, to make sure all students are progressing.
- Engaging parents in the educational process by sending home newsletters, having classroom Web pages, and sending home
- positive postcards or making positive phone calls, to communicate with parents.
There are so many more examples of the dedication of parents, staff, and students, including acknowledging our secretaries, paraprofessionals, our custodians, facilities department, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers, for all they do. I wanted to highlight a few as a way to celebrate Sherman’s successes during the 2009-2010 school year. As we look to next year, we will continue to work together as a school team to meet each child’s needs by building partnerships with parents to find out students’ learning strengths. We will also focus on asking students questions about how they learn best and about their interests in and out of school.
Be sure to encourage your children to continue to read and write in different ways during the summer. In addition, visiting museums, attending concerts and plays, and participating in camps, are great ways to continue to stay active and learn throughout the summer.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Pollard
