March 2010

Dear Roth parents and guardians,

As I promised in my February newsletter, all grades participated in town meetings the week of February 8. During the meetings, our PBIS team of teachers focused on two things: being prepared to learn and being respectful. Both of these items are included in our school’s PBIS Matrix. Students were able to describe what each of these looks and sounds like and agreed that these were behaviors that support their learning on a daily basis. In addition, students had an opportunity to see the results of a student survey completed by our student advisory groups, which revealed students’ perceptions of how the year has gone so far. Students and adults walked away with much to celebrate, as well as much to think about in terms of what we need to work on as a school community.

As I observe your children in classes, I am witness to the reading and writing expectations that are supported across content areas. More than ever, your children are provided with opportunities to read independently and improve on their writing skills throughout the day and not only in ELA classes. Teachers in every content area and at each grade level are purposefully providing time during class to conference with students individually, work with students in small groups, and facilitate class discussions that help students to monitor their own progress. All of these activities allow teachers to monitor student progress and regularly provide informed feedback to parents.

If you have specific questions regarding your child’s reading and writing achievement or how you can support these skills at home, please contact your child’s ELA teacher.

During the month of March, administrators and counselors begin the very important work of supporting those students who will be transitioning from fifth to sixth grade and from eighth to ninth grade. Families of current fifth grade students will receive the sixth grade orientation booklet, which will provide information about the middle school program and identify important activities that will take place from now until September. Families of our current eighth graders will receive information regarding ninth grade orientation events that will take place beginning in April. Please be sure to contact your child’s eighth grade counselor if you have any questions or concerns regarding this process.

Please refer to our calendar at the back of this newsletter for special events that will take place during March. Among the highlights are the eighth grade activity night, student/staff basketball game (a fund raiser for the American Heart Association), and our spring musical, Annie.

Remember that spring is just around the corner!

Sincerely,

Denise Zeh
