March . . .  it comes “in like a lion and out like a lamb”… at least I hope so.  I for one am more than ready for Winter to go as I look forward to the warmth of Spring.  I am so happy to report that we continue to make great progress with our students, both in and out of the classroom setting.   Our students continue to impress me with their hard work.  We have 150 students who have a cumulative grade point average between 100-and 91%.  That is truly remarkable!

Schools also about community too and last month was a great example of just how caring we can be as a school community.   There have been some great news stories about the Rush-Henrietta vs. Fairport staff basketball game.  It has been featured on YNN News, WHAM TV and in the Democrat and Chronicle.  It doesn’t get this attention just because we are arch rivals.  It gets this attention because the R-H community is teaming up with Fairport and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Pluta Cancer Center, right here in Henrietta.  I don’t have the final tally yet, as the baskets raffle will end on March 16th.  I will be sure to post the dollar amount when I get one.  Our goal is to raise $30,000 – wow, that would be incredible!

This month, we will continue that good will as we celebrate Pi Day (March 14, or 3.14).  Pi day is observed in many schools across the nation and this is the 4th annual Pi Day celebration here at the NGA. In honor of one of the most well known mathematical numbers in the world, we ask students to consider making a donation to the Wilmot Cancer Center.  The math class with the most money raised gets to “pie” their math teacher.  That’s right - a big ol’ whipped cream pie right in the face.  The event will happen during lunch on March 12th, and the kids love it.  By the way, the two classes that raise the most money get to pie Mr. Pringle and myself in the face too.  They really like doing that.  It really is all in good fun and for a great cause.  To me, that is what makes our high schools such valuable assets to the community it teaches our students  that they are apart of something bigger than themselves.

I’ll end with some celebratory notes and thank yous from the past month . . .

Congratulations to Rosalyn Louk and Cassidy Rose, who were both recognized as Fall Scholar Athletes.  These young women exemplify the ability to balance their academic responsibilities with their passion for athletics. They are excelling both in and out of the classroom.  Kudos to them both.

Congratulations to Spencer Phillips and Michael Cole, winners of the Rochester Police Department's "Do the Right Thing" award. They stepped in and stopped a fellow student from being bullied on the bus. We are so proud of both of them and hope that more students follow their positive example.

Special thanks to the students, parents and staff who helped make our Semi-Formal dance, the “Black and White Masquerade”, a great success.  The students looked great and their behavior was even better. Despite the cold weather conditions, a good time was had by all.  Thanks so much to the staff and parents who spent their time decorating the school on Friday night and chaperoning the event on Saturday evening.  You all are such wonderful role models for our students!

All the best!

Greg Lane
