From the Office of the Principal…
Dear Friends,
February 1 marks the beginning of the second semester. Students will receive an updated schedule on the morning of February 1. Most classes will remain as they were in the first semester, however, many electives and most ELA and social studies classes for seniors are half-year courses so some scheduling changes will occur.
We have been sharing information with you this year about PBIS, Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. Our district-wide PBIS team has identified five characteristics we want all Rush-Henrietta students to exemplify and model. The traits are being Caring, Ready to Learn, Respectful, Responsible and Trustworthy. Personally, I think Caring is primary because it helps to guide us in setting priorities for ourselves and serves as a moral and ethical compass for us. In short, if we instill a sense of caring in our kids, they can motivate themselves to be Ready to Learn, Respectful, Responsible and Trustworthy. I mention this to you because we will be engaging in some activities in the next few months to show how we care here at R-H.
First, our Student Council will once again co-sponsor the R-H vs. Fairport Faculty Basketball Game at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 11, at Fairport High School. We initiated this event five years ago to give students at R-H and Fairport the opportunity to work together on a project. Rush-Henrietta vs. Fairport competition in athletics is intense, thrilling, and legendary, in some cases. As exciting as those competitions may be, they are, after all, just games. In the real world, people working together accomplish more than those who simply compete against one another. So, the faculty basketball game gives students from both communities something to cheer for together and work towards together. All proceeds from ticket sales are donated to the Pluta Cancer Center right here in our community. This year, different departments or groups of adults will be putting together “Winter Fun” baskets for our students to bid on in a Silent Auction the week of the “big game.” These proceeds will also be donated to Pluta. Second, I was approached by a student group last month that expressed an interest in fundraising to raise relief money for Haiti following the devastating earthquake in January. As of writing this letter we are just in the initial stages of planning but I wanted to mention it to you so you would know that we are working with students who do exemplify and model Caring each and every day. We have terrific students here at R-H. I am very proud of the work our students, advisors, and our PBIS teams have done to exemplify and model Caring in our school community.
On January 22, I had the pleasure of attending the induction ceremony for our newly formed Business Honor Society. Sixteen R-H students were inducted. Students, parents, teachers, and administrators attended and were all proud and excited take part in this inaugural event. Congratulations to Eghosa Aghayere, Yasser Ali, Chris Bailey, Dana Barrese, Emma Bettiol, Nicholas Bucci, Brittany Capozzi, Christopher Chiang, Samantha Douangphachanh, Emily Guelzow, Ryan Lumb, Kelsey Magraw, Sean McShea, Austin Sanderl, Sean Tobey and Amanda Welch.
January was a big month for our business students. Seventeen R-H business students attended the regional DECA competition that took place right here in Rochester. Eleven of our students performed so well that they will move on to the NYS DECA competition this coming March. Congratulations to Sean Tobey, Dana Barrese, Lauren Della Stua, Ashley Miller, Andrew Lewis, Emma Bettiol, Trevor Newton, Kamarah Caven, Eric Breese, Liz McNeil, Chris Chiang, Luke Sorber, Kristen Julian, Nick Bucci, and Eghosa Aghayere.
On a final note, please take a look at the district’s Web site and check out the on-demand videos we are producing. The videos are well done and very informative. We are lucky to have the capacity to get this valuable information out to parents in this format. The most recent video is titled, “Understanding the Course Selection Process.” Look at them at your leisure; I think you’ll be impressed!
As always, contact me at 359-5208 or Bpatton@rhnet.org with questions, concerns or compliments! Enjoy February break!
Sincerely,
Beth E. Patton
SHS Principal
