The New Year is off to a great start! Students recently took a practice NYS ELA assessment and teachers reported students performed well and are adequately prepared for the upcoming exam. owever, we encourage you to help your child as much as possible. Ask them questions about the books, magazines and articles they are reading. Encourage your child to explain the author’s point of view, doing so will help them analyze and synthesize the text beyond concrete facts and pinions. There are several internal opportunities for students to strengthen their literacy skills. With the support of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools, we were able to purchase a variety of books throughout the year that are of high interest to students among various gender, ethnic and racial backgrounds. We also have literacy coaches, reading teachers and special education consultants to support your child with reading comprehension and writing. If you feel your child is in need of additional support, please call your school counselor to set up an appointment with his/her team of teachers.
Black History Month:
February marks the month that we celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans, past and present. We celebrate our diversity and commonalities in many ways at Burger. If you would like to come and share your family history with Burger students, please contact me and we can arrange for our students to take advantage of our living history in Rush-Henrietta. The opportunity to share your culture with Burger students is extended to all families regardless of race or ethnicity. Our goal is to explore our perceived differences so that we can better understand our similarities.
Teacher Homepages:
Please visit our teacher homepages by clicking here. Although creating individual homepages is optional, many teachers have created them to allow easy access to pertinent information for you and your child. There are many teachers who use alternate ways of communicating due dates, homework support and course expectations. Feel free to email or call teachers directly if you have questions. Their contact information is located in the rear of the newsletter.
Parent Volunteer Fridays: Continuing again this month, we are inviting Burger parents and community members to volunteer in our building. We will dedicate one Friday per month per grade level to support our students and staff. February 5th will be designated for 6th grade support, February 12th for 7th grade and February 26th for grade 8. If interested, call our main office at 359-5301 and we will assign you a task when you arrive. If you can not attend on a Friday and still wish to volunteer, we can accommodate these requests also.
Weather:
Now that winter is here, the weather may cause hazardous conditions. Please refer to the district Web site (www.rhnet.org) and/or local news stations for school closings and delays.
As the weather outside gets frightful, PLEASE encourage your child to wear appropriate clothing. There are many students wearing shorts and t-shirts to and from school without a jacket.
Burger Offers E-News Service to School Community (Please sign up)
I am inviting parents to participate in the Burger Middle School E-mail List. The school is taking advantage of the E-News feature on the district's Web site, www.rhnet.org, and is offering this service to the school community.
The E-News feature enables the school to effectively manage a large volume of e-mail, providing parents with important updates as needed, and ensuring that all addresses are absolutely correct. It also gives subscribers the opportunity to privately opt in and out at any time. Some parents have even signed up for the list twice, once with their home e-mail address and once with their work e-mail address they have access to during the day.
To subscribe to this free service, visit www.rhnet.org and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on subscribe to “E News” tab. You will see a screen where you fill out your name and e-mail address. Then select Burger Middle School News, and any other news you might be interested in receiving such as the Superintendent’s periodic mailings.
We believe the Burger E-News feature will enable us to further provide timely and important communication between the school and the home. As always, thank you for your interest in your child's education and Burger Middle School.
