It is with mixed emotions that I announce my resignation from Rush-Henrietta as middle school principal. I have learned so much from many of my students, teachers, professional staff, parents and administrative colleagues. The academic focus of Burger and the journey we have begun as home-school partners towards building a better Burger has been gratifying. Effective July 1, I will begin my new position as School Chief of the Rochester City School District. As many of you know, my passion for urban education and working with and for underprivileged students has shaped my moral purpose and career aspirations. As a Rochester City School District Chief, I will supervise a cluster of K-12 schools with wide latitude for independent judgment and decision making, as well as assisting in the formation of educational policy and practice. I look forward to working with each of you for the remainder of this school year.
June marks the time when we say goodbye to the eldest members of our school community, our eighth graders. These individuals will leave lasting impressions in the hearts and minds of our staff and have been one of the most involved groups of students to exit Burger. Many students play multiple sports, are involved in band, chorus and/or orchestra, participated in Burger Idol, and were members of the STAR Club, National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, morning intramurals or other activities offered.
Three months from now, Burger staff will welcome our incoming sixth graders. I have met many of these students, and I am excited to have them join our team. Burger is a very welcoming place, and the staff looks forward to helping our new students and parents make a smooth transition into middle school. I encourage you to contact me at 359-5308 or SNelms@rhnet.org prior to July 1. After which, please contact Kelly Ellingham at KEllingham@rhnet.org at 359-5341 until a new principal is named.
Our staff has been working diligently to identify the school improvement goals for next year. It is important that we take time to share our beliefs about the academic focus of programs, systematic response to positive and negative behaviors while building a middle school that is conducive to student learning. Burger is focused on developing the whole child, academically, emotionally and socially. I encourage you to join the Burger Parent Group so that your voice can be heard, and your suggestions implemented.
Burger Offers E-News Service to School Community
I am inviting parents to participate in the Burger Middle School e-mail List. The school is taking advantage of the ENews feature on the district Web site, www.rhnet.org, and is offering this service to the school community.
The E-News feature enables the school to effectively manage a large volume of e-mail, providing parents with important updates as needed, and ensuring that all addresses are absolutely correct. It also gives subscribers the opportunity to privately opt in and out at any time. Some parents have even signed up for the list twice, once with their home email address and once with the work e-mail address they have access to during the day.
To subscribe to this free service, visit www.rhnet.org and scroll down to click on the "E-News" icon. There will be a screen where you fill out your name and e-mail address. Then, select Burger Middle School News and any other news you might be interested in receiving, such as the Superintendent’s periodic mailings.
We believe the Burger E-News feature will enable us to further provide timely and important communication between the school and home. As always, thank you for your interest in your child's education at Burger Middle School.
