Top o’ the month to you:

March marks the start of spring. Trees start to bud, the sun shines a bit more, snow hopefully starts to melt and students begin to get excited for spring break. This is a time when students often need a little push to stay focused and motivated. You can assist in their academic success by checking their agenda, organizing their lockers and contacting teachers if you notice some complacency at home. Together we can make a difference.

No school on March 19th for students:
K-12 students will not attend school on Friday, March 19th. Rush-Henrietta, like other Monroe County school districts, has declared this day for a Superintendent's Conference Day. This day will further the district's on-going commitment to professional development and will be used for building-level teacher collaboration.

Dance China visits Burger on March 24th:
Founded in 1974, the New York Chinese Cultural Center is a performing arts and educational organization that promotes the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture by preserving traditional genres and nurturing innovations that reflect our dynamic and diverse cultural heritage.

Dance China NY (formerly known as the Chinese Folk Dance Company): the resident touring company of NYCCC, is comprised of award-winning professional dancers and musicians. The Company brings the richness of traditional dance, Peking Opera and music to audiences across the country. Each year, the Company presents over 750 performances, workshops, master classes and lecture/demonstrations for 180,000 people of all ages. They have toured to theaters, schools and cultural centers in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, DC.

Our 6th grade students will participate in a series of workshops. We will have an end-of-the day assembly for all students, staff and parents. I will send a reminder, by e-mail, later this month. To ensure you get the reminder, please sign up for our ENews (see below) if you have not already done so.

Weather:
Although we’re looking forward to Spring, winter is still here and the weather may cause hazardous conditions. Please refer to the district website (www.rhnet.org) and/or local news stations for school closings and delays.

PLEASE encourage your child to wear appropriate clothing. There are many students wearing shorts and tshirts to and from school without a jacket.

Middle School Parents newsletter: Included in this newsletter is an article written for parents of middle school-age children. I hope you find the information useful and insightful.

Burger Offers E-News Service to School Community:
I am inviting parents to participate in the Burger Middle School E-mail List. The school is taking advantage of the E-News feature on the district's Web site, www.rhnet.org, and is offering this service to the school community.

The E-News feature enables the school to effectively manage a large volume of e-mail, providing parents with important updates as needed, and ensuring that all addresses are absolutely correct. It also gives subscribers the opportunity to privately opt in and out at any time. Some parents have even signed up for the list twice, once with their home e-mail address and once with their work e-mail address they have access to during the day.

To subscribe to this free service, visit www.rhnet.org and scroll down to click on the "E-News" icon. You will see a screen where you fill out your name and e-mail address. Then, select Burger Middle School News and any other news you might be interested in receiving, such as the Superintendent’s periodic mailings.

We believe the Burger E-News feature will enable us to further provide timely and important communication between the school and the home. As always, thank you for your interest in your child's education and Burger Middle School.

Parent Volunteer Fridays: Starting this month, we are inviting Burger parents and community members to volunteer in our building. We will dedicate one Friday per month per grade level to support our students and staff. March 5th will be designated for 6th grade support, March 12th for 7th grade and March 26th for grade 8. Simply call the main office at 359-5301 and we will assign you a task when you arrive. If you can not attend on a Friday and still wish to volunteer, we can accommodate this request also.

Parent Group Meeting: Another great turnout for our February Parent Group Meeting. Please make plans to join us on March 15th @ 7:00pm in the library for our next meeting. I will be discussing the use of teacher homepages. As of March 1st, all teachers at Burger will have a functional webpage. You will be able to assess upcoming assignments, projects and homework. There will also be contact information for each teacher.

Teacher Homepages: Please visit our teacher homepages at: www.rhnet.org/burger.cfm. Although creating individual homepages is optional, many teachers have created a homepage to allow easy access to pertinent information for you and your child. There are many teachers who use alternate ways of communicating due dates, homework support and course expectations. Feel free to email or call teachers directly if you have questions. Their contact information is located in the back of this newsletter.

Get the information you need: There are two methods for obtaining information about Burger Middle School. You can call the activity line at 359-5302 or check the Burger website www.rhnet.org/burger (look under the AM announcements section). Both sources of information are updated daily.

I’ll end this newsletter with an excerpt from an Irish blessing, Happy St. Patrick’s Day:

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

Sincerely,

Shaun Nelms
Principal
